Emotional impact of hair loss

Half of all men experience balding. In principle, it is not a health problem, but in many cases, it affects a person's well-being, sometimes even leading to anxiety and/or depression.

Most men resign themselves to baldness, considering it an inevitable fact, but the majority do not like losing their hair. They feel older than they are, and quite a few try to fight it with treatments. Although most accept it, especially in public, they do not feel comfortable with their new appearance.

Many studies corroborate the psychological impact of hair loss. One of the most recent was conducted by the Department of Psychology at the University of Westminster in London (United Kingdom), in which 214 participants answered questions about acceptance, feelings, personal relationships, and treatments, among others.

The results show that alopecia has significant consequences and a considerable emotional impact. Many of the responses describe a loss of self-esteem and confidence, and feelings of anger, worry, and stress were also recorded, which could trigger anxiety and depression. These feelings are reinforced by the helplessness men suffer due to the little control they have over the problem.

The authors warn about these negative psychological impacts and recommend that health professionals take into account the emotional repercussions of baldness to try to modify individual perceptions and help modulate responses, such as anger and worry.

But many men do not give up on hair loss and try to find a solution. The problem is that, despite the supposedly promising results advertised by many treatments, the reality is that few prove to be effective.

Until now, baldness has been considered a progressive and irreversible problem, but recent research could provide new treatment perspectives. American scientists have identified a protein that could be involved in hair loss; it is a prostaglandin found at high levels in cells or hair follicles in bald areas. This seems to be a promising line of research for the treatment of alopecia.
